There is growing discontent on the part of UK investors in relation to retention
bonuses as evidenced by voting and public comment following the AGMs of Royal
Dutch Shell, GlaxoSmithKline and Reed Elsevier amongst others. Whilst it is
clear that companies need to ensure continuity and a smooth succession,
retention bonuses are no guarantee of that and, from a shareholder perspective,
suggest that the existing remuneration structures are not working as intended.
